Corniche, Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi’s six kilometre Corniche is truly made for walking. It provides near-perfect ground cover in the form of a wide, solid, fairly evenly-paved footpath that makes its way from one end to the other, rimming the sea on one side and the city edge on the other. Thoughtful planners have also included a few jogging tracks along the route.
As is the lay of Abu Dhabi, it is likely that the Corniche will be reached by car and half a dozen or so parking areas along the stretch make for an easy destination, especially if your walk is coupled as family-fun time, and you have children, buggies and bicycles in tow.
Indeed, the Corniche comes with an array of outdoor activity choices, from shaded seating, to lush landscaping, a cycle track, children’s playgrounds, and, of course, a beach.
For those who want to kick off their walking shoes and indulge in water sports, special swimming areas are monitored by swim experts and lifeguards.
Khalifa Park, Abu Dhabi
Khaleefa Park can claim to be one of the oldest public parks in the capital. It could also be one of the greenest. The park is three kilometres across giving a hop, skip, walk, jog or run in the company of majestic, mature trees, seasonal flora, sweeping lawns - and plenty of benches if you opt to catch your breath and savour the view of the majestic Grand Mosque.
Do note that there is an entrance fee of Dhs1; pay at the security booth, near the main entrance gate, next to Park Rotana Hotel.
Al Mushrif, Abu Dhabi
The serious joggers or runners among you will already likely know – and use – the 2.5 kilometre custom-built, world-class track at Al Mushrif Park, Khaleej Al Arabi Street. It spans the length from ADNOC Petrol Station to the Federal Passports Bridge.
The track has been built with consideration of the latest safety and fitness guidelines, to offer a clean, safe and comfortable route. The track is enhanced with an array of public facilities including benches, water coolers and vendor machines.
The good news is that it is a fine example of Abu Dhabi’s bigger plan – to create more than 5,200 metres of jogging track throughout the city.
